Stone cottages and white-harled houses scattered along the floor of a high valley, beneath a steep heather hillside lit gold and green by low sun, with bare moorland hills fading into the distance

Holiday cottages in Wanlockhead

Scotland’s highest village, in the Lowther Hills: lead-mining history, the Southern Upland Way and the Mennock Pass on the doorstep.

Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland

Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland, about 1,500 feet up in the Lowther Hills at the far north of the region. It was built on lead — mined here for three centuries — and the old workings, the miners’ rows and the beam engine over a shaft are still part of the place rather than tidied away behind it.

It is a small, quiet village in big, bare hill country, and that is the reason to come. The Southern Upland Way comes straight through, the Mennock Pass down to Nithsdale is one of the finest drives in the south of Scotland, and on a clear night the sky above the village is properly dark.

Sanquhar, the nearest town, is about eight miles away down the pass, with shops and a railway station. Wanlockhead suits people who want to walk out of the door into the hills and do not mind driving for a supermarket.

Things to do in Wanlockhead

The Museum of Lead Mining is the heart of the village — a guided walk into an old mine, the miners’ cottages furnished as they were, and the Miners’ Library, one of the oldest subscription libraries in Europe. Wanlockhead is also gold country, and the museum runs gold panning in the burns.

The Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway, Britain’s highest adhesion railway, runs short trips on a narrow-gauge line between the two villages on summer weekends.

For walking, the Southern Upland Way crosses the village on its way between Sanquhar and Beattock, and the Lowther Hills rise straight behind it. Down the Mennock Pass, Sanquhar has the world’s oldest working post office, open since 1712, and the Tolbooth museum in its eighteenth-century town house.

Getting to Wanlockhead

  • Wanlockhead is at the northern edge of the region, on the B797. From the south and west it is about eight miles up the Mennock Pass from the A76 near Sanquhar; from the M74 it is about twenty minutes from junction 13 at Abington, through Leadhills.
  • Glasgow is roughly an hour and a quarter, Edinburgh about an hour and a half, Carlisle about an hour and a quarter by the M74. Dumfries is about three quarters of an hour down Nithsdale.
  • The nearest railway station is Sanquhar, on the line between Glasgow and Dumfries, eight miles away. There is no practical way to reach the village without a car unless you are walking the Southern Upland Way.
